BDSM 101 – The Essential tools for practice and play Bondage and discipline, dominance and submission, sadism and masochism: they are nothing new for humanity, and yet BDSM is slowly becoming more normalized as a civil practice in western society.

With 50 Shades of Grey becoming a common pop culture motif, and popular NETFLIX shows popping up, like Bonding and Sex Education, suddenly going to an evening bondage class seems no more as strange as evening yoga! Now that the kinky doors begin to open more and more, we must keep in mind that BDSM is a practice with history, traditions, and many schools of thought. Along with various different social media platforms, such as Fetlife, JoyClub, and Darkside, there are likely communities, meet ups, and venues for parties and learning near your hometown.

But, with all these possibilities, it can often be hard to know exactly where and how to start. This workshop is meant to be a starting point for the kinbaku-lover who wishes to dive deeper into the general world of BDSM. We will cover the basics of BD-DS-SM, along with the fundamental, unspoken letter C, for consent, posing as the red line through every practice in every school worth encountering. Of course, this start will be colored by Swen and Saara’s own background and experiences in their 20+ years of practicing BDSM as students, private persons, and facilitators. These personal and professional experiences curate the content of this beginner’s workshop.

Specifically, within this workshop, we will cover:
– Common language used within the BDSM scene Verbal & nonverbal communication practices

– Common consent methods used in BDSM Finding, communicating, and managing our soft and hard limits
– Power dynamics and establishing healthy boundaries between play and reality
– Body mechanics and techniques for establishing a session flow
– Methods for playing with power Tips for creativity in play
– Techniques for processing and playing with physical and emotional pain
– Safety and techniques for pain play using your hands and basic tools
– Integrating general BDSM into Kinbaku sessions Techniques for starting, pacing, and ending your sessions
– Fetish and how it connects to BDSM This workshop hopes to give a solid base of information and understanding needed to know how to start meeting likeminded people, start playing, and how to further explore the topics that are interesting for you!

SAARA REI
Saara Rei is a performance artist and former competitive dancer and classical musician with a background in education, facilitation, and public speaking. Saara’s work generally centers around the exploration of suffering, both physical and emotional. Through her kink practice, Saara has come to understand that suffering comes from the comparison of what has been or could be to the present moment. And with that, Saara enjoys teaching about how to use suffering as a path to presence and enjoyment in life. Saara’s academic experience adds an intellectual flair to complement her performative approach to bodywork. Playfulness and humor make up a big chunk of Saara’s personality and approach to life, giving her workshops a very exploitative and light atmosphere, even while approaching some of the heaviest of topics.

SWEN BRANDY (CARNIVORE) Swen Brandy (CARNIVORE)
is a visual artist and former competitive martial artist who’s been practicing BDSM for 20 years, focusing primarily on supporting and motivating the mind and body to experience edge play and (extreme and sexual) play challenges. Experienced in waterboarding (C## Method) knows the process intensively from three sides and also deals with the practice from an educational*1 perspective. Swen teaches individuals and couples who want to actively and passively engage in sex positive or bdsm oriented play and document it with cameras. His core topics include the creation of body- and mind-challenges, impact play, rough-body play, play-fighting, body mechanics, as well as the design of creative play scenarios for private or professional use.
